How To Make A Witch Costume

Posted on April 3rd, 2008 by howtomakestuff

You do not like a lot of things that you see in your office. For one, you do not like the way your boss suddenly sacked some of your peers without giving them prior notice. You were also disappointed when you heard the news that one of your closest office pals was forced to resign since she was picked on by management. Frustrated, you wish you have magic powers so that you can put some sense in the heads of your superiors. You can actually do that this coming Halloween. Go to a Halloween party with your self-made witch costume and serve your bosses magical witch brews.

A witch costume is a direct recreation of the wicked witch who appears in a lot of fairy tales and children’s stories. It is often sold in toy stores and department stores. Usually, witch costumes are cheap as they are poorly designed and are made with low quality materials. You can purchase a cheap witch costume if you don’t really have a thing for best costume awards, otherwise you might as well make your own witch costume.

Good witch costumes focus on the numerous tiny details that characterize storybook witches. Good costumes consist of a hat, a robe, a wand, a broom and the witch’s crooked nose. You should be able to efficiently recreate each of those witch details if you want to raise the eyebrows of your friends and peers.

Materials Used:

  • black pointy hat
  • black cape
  • newspaper
  • paper mache paste
  • long black and pointy boots
  • gray wig
  • scissors
  • black eyeliner
  • cake foundation
  • old black shirt
  • black gypsy skirt
  • black nail polish
  • 6-inch twig
  • besom broom
  • cardboard (3 x 3 in.)
  • varnish

Face to Face with a Witch

Witches are known for their long pointy hats and their distorted facial features. To recreate the witch’s head, you should first go to a toy store to buy a black pointy hat and a gray scruffy-haired wig. Cover your face with large amounts of cake foundation after. When the foundation settles, your face will look old and wrinkly. Apply eyeliner to make the witch’s features look sharper. Once done, get several strips of newspaper and the cardboard sheet. Rub each newspaper strip with paper mache paste then stick them to the cardboard sheet until you form the wrinkly and crooked witch’s nose. When the newspaper dries, you can wear the wig, hat and nose.

Black is Black

First, wear an old black shirt that looks heavily used and a black cape. If you do not have a cape, you can get one from a toy store or a costume shop. Now you can go to your lawn and look for the thickest and sturdiest six-inch stick that you can find. Cover it with varnish to make it tougher and fetch your besom broom. For those who do not have a besom broom, a little visit to the appliance store shall take care of everything. Wear black nail polish to give your witch costume a tinge of goth.

Gypsy Witch or Witchy Gypsy?

Despite their withered appearance, witches are mystical beings. There is no other lower body garment that can highlight a witch’s mysticism better than a black gypsy skirt. The stone and sequin-covered skirt has a dark and brooding appeal to it that perfectly suits the twisted persona of a storybook witch. You can get a gypsy skirt from the gypsy-themed clothing lines of retail stores. Once you have gotten a gypsy skirt, you can put on a pair of black stockings and a pair of long black boots.

Which Witch?

Now, your witch costume is done. You can add a few more details to it, just in case someone else shows up with a witch costume that resembles yours. Sew a few original patterns to your shirt or wear black lipstick. At this point, you have the freedom to customize your witch costume so that it completely stands out over any other costume.

The witch costume will certainly bring fear and dread to the hearts of your most hated peers. Now, it’s up to you if you want to push the envelope and make brews out of lizards’ tails and snails’ antennae.
